96 Grand Am with 3.1l Automatic. Car turns over, starts and dies by the time rpm reach 1,000. The vehicle has done this twice before. Both times the mechanic replaced the computer. First time it was approx. 30 days and the replacement went out. Now, it's been 60 days and it's doing it again. Any ideas what is causing the computers to go out?

As far as a computer blow out, it is incorrectly protected from a short (fuses and such) or is improperly grounded. It may be a bad voltage regulator sending to much voltage down the lines. But, normally fuses protect against this, so it may be jerry rigged wiring or the like. It, although unlikely may also be incorrect installation vibrating it to death, over heating it, or allowing it to get wet. Maybe they are junk yard parts too.

Thanks for the input. I have had the car repaired at a shop each time. The computer is a reman. The car is all original with no wiring alterations. They do not seem to know why the computer goes out. Hope they can figure it out.
