I have a 2001 F150 FX4 5.4L with 70,000 miles on it. I just bought it used at a dealership and about 2 weeks ago. I started noticings a popping sound when I shift from park to drive or from park to reverse or from reverse to drive. It kinda sounds like the frame is popping but I cant tell if thats it. The transmission is fine. There is no sign of tranny issues at all once the truck is in motion and it shifts perfectly fine. Please help.

Hey guys,

I was the one who asked you about the cracking sound or popping sound coming from under my truck whenever I shifted from park to drive or drive to reverse etc. Well, I took it to the dealership where I bought it and they said the u joints were not loose or damaged. They didnt tell me what it could be as I know they didnt want to take the time to repair an "as is" used truck they sold me. So I took it to a friend of mine who owns a auto shop and he found the issue in like 15 minutes. It ended up being where the rear axle goes into the differential housing or the differential side gear. There is some loose play that is causing the axle to make a sound whenever there is motion that puts stress on the axle. That is what is causing the crackling sound. I am taking it back to the dealership to see if they will repair it since it does invlove the differential. Thanks for the help guys!
