1997 Grand Cherokee Musty Mildew smell

I have a 97 Grand Cherokee inline 6 with about 175,000 miles on it. There is a really bad musty, mildew smell coming from the vents. Seems worse when you turn the air on.
How do I get rid of this nasty smell?

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 94 CHEROKEE. IN ANOTHER SECTION OF THE SITE IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT HAS A DRAIN PAN AND SOMETIMES THE DRAIN HOLE WILL CLOG AND BACK DRAINAGE INTO THE INTERIOR. I HAVE NOT CHECKED THIS ON MY OWN VEHICLE BUT I WANTED TO PASS IT ON.

Hey donzi,
Bobs got that one right! And its no easy task as the heater core, evap core and the whole assembly they are in needs to be removed and properly cleaned/disinfected as there are all kinds of nasties growin' in there!
