We have a 96 Sable GS with 125k miles.

Service Engine Soon Light is always on but it has never been an issue as far as we know.

In the last 4-5 days since we had the cold snap down here in FL with nights around 30, the engine temp gage goes to HIGH and then beyond into the red area within 5 min of driving.

Hood never gets hot, the engine light with the little smoke never goes on.

Oil light had come on, I put a quart in. So oil seems to be ok now.

No transmission problems, autotrans and shifts fine, RPMs all seem to be fine when driving.

No smell associated, I try to run the heater to take some heat off the engine but that only seems to drive the temp gage up more.

I admit I know jack about cars, could it be the coolant? Or water for the radiator? I really dont know where to start.

I commute 45 min each way daily at high speed and am concerned about the engine failing.

Thanks!

I have a gut feeling you not one for maintenance. That clouds the issue. Also clouding the issue is letting the CEL go for a long period of time.

Driving with the temp gauge in the red can cook and engine or cause expensive damage and may further cloud the issue.

Did you check the level of the oil, or just blindly add a quart?

What is the coolant level at?
