My 1990 F-150 5.8 automatic 96k starts fine but shuts off when I shift from P to R. I have started it in N and it does the same going to D or R. If I give it gas it will work but I don't think that my U- joints or rear end will hold up if I continue. Once it goes into gear it drives fine. When I stop and try to put it in park it dies as soon as I hit N.

Hows your fuel pump? Check the presssure and the amount it pumps out. Also give the tranny a good lookover

The fuel pump seems fine. Once I get it in gear it runs great, the transmission shifts fine, ONCE I get it in gear. I have to give the truck a considerable amount of gas then quickly shift into drive, chirping the tires, but after that it runs great. I found that if I turn off the overdrive after I get it into drive it goes from D to N to R to P with no problem, but if I turn it off and restart it I have to rev it up to shift. I thing it may be electrical.
