1984 Alfa Romeo Spider Tachometer not working

I have an electronic tachometer and it does nothing. How can I tell if it is the wiring or connections rather than the tach itself without getting another ($$$) tach and connecting it. It is a three wire, and I think is the original part, but not sure.

Did you ever resolve this issue? I have the same problem with a 1984 Spider.
