Air mixture screw

I have a 1985.5 nissan hardbody with 182000 miles and was getting horriable gas milage. I did all the routine maintenace and still nothing. So I noticed that the air mixture scre was super loose I could turn it with a point of a pencil. I turned all the way down and now I am getting 26 to 35 miles a gallon. Can this mess anything up because suppossingly that screw comes factory set? Can someone give me some advice!

Lightly seat eh screw with a screwdriver then use a vacuum gauge and get highest reading tha tis the corret way to set it. It will probably go out a turn and a half or around there. What you did was ok
