Can you give a little more detail with what you are referring to with the air boot?

I am just not familiar with that term. I suspect you mean the rubber tubing that goes from the air box to the throttle body.

If that is the case, there are hose clamps on both sides of the tube that you will remove, and the hose will pull out.

Can you get a picture of the part that you are referring to if this is not what you are talking about?

I am attaching a picture of this below so let me know and we can go from there.

Thanks

Hi Kenny, thank you for your response. I think it might be called a air intake boot. It's made out of rubber and it has a small tear in it. I was told it won't pass smog if it isn't replaced. The problem is according to Toyota that part is obsolete and can't be found. I would send you a picture but I'm not sure where it's located. I was told it's somewhere by the air filter? I don't know much about cars (I'm a Women) so sorry for any frustration. I was also told that Toyota made more V8' Tundra's than V6's 1st generation, 2003. It seems odd that a truck part can't be found. Have you heard of this problem before?

Got it.

Let's start with opening the hood. Here is a guide that will help with doing this.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-open-a-car-hood

Once the hook is open you will see a black box on the driver or passenger side of the engine compartment. The rubber tube that connects the box to the throttle body is where this tear is going to be. The tube is going to be an accordion style so you may have to move it around. See the picture below.

If you can get a picture of the tube and locate the crack in it then we can figure out how to replace it.

You do not need the exact part or if this is in a good place, we can even repair it. Possibly just use duct tape to cover the crack.

Just because this is cracked doesn't mean you will fail but the chances are good. We just have to prevent air from getting into the intake because as you can see from the picture the tube is past the sensor and that sensor needs to measure the amount of air coming into the engine. If there is a crack in this tube, then there is more air coming in than the engine is measuring. That will throw off the air fuel mixture and that will cause issues.

Thank you. Glad to help. Please let us know if you have issues with this but I am sure this can be resolved.

I forgot to ask, are there any issues with the vehicle? Is the check engine light on or did they just find this and tell you that it needs to be replaced as you could fail emissions?

If there are no issues, then more than likely you would be fine this time.

Hi Kenny, I took my truck into the shop originally because battery light came on. Battery is only 2 years old and holds a charge, turns out needed new alternator and alternator belt, new spark plugs and spark plug wires and coils (spark plugs had over 93,000 on them) That's when they said they noticed tear in air boot. I haven't looked under the hood yet, but I'll take a picture of air boot going off of diagram you sent. Thanks so much for doing that.
Also, the last couple of times I had to do smog check, I took it in to Toyota dealership for them to do drive pattern. After all this work truck is driving great just want it to pass smog test.

Got it. Here is good info on this topic.

There are a couple things that cause you to fail. Check engine lights or the drive cycle is not completed which means there was an issue, and the vehicle has not passed what are called monitors to confirm there is still not an issue.

This assumes the vehicle is running well.

Here is a guide on the common reasons for failing smog:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/smog-test-inspection-information

Also, I am attaching the drive cycle to force the monitors to run and confirm there is no issue.

This way you don't have to have the dealer do it if you don't want to.

Kenny, thank you for all the great info I really appreciate it. I tried to send a picture of the tear in the Air intake boot, but I couldn't send it from my phone because I'm communicating with you from my laptop. I'm bad with technology. The tear is on top right where the hose clamp is tightened, it looks like the tear is on the metal part that the hose clamp is tightened to and not in the body of the of the rubber. I hope I'm making sense.

Perfect. A picture truly is worth a thousand words.

That very well could cause an issue, but I highly doubt that is going to cause any right now or cause you to fail smog.

It should be repaired but I don't consider that an immediate need.

Looking at the picture I attached below, if the crack continues following the direction of the arrow, then you will most likely start getting some mass air flow sensor issues.

If you don't want to replace it immediately, just get some of that black gorilla tap that they sell at Lowes and just wrap it all the way around the tube so that it doesn't peel off. All you have to do is block that small opening to keep air from being sucked in. Clearly this is not the "proper" repair, but it will prevent any issues with your smog test.

Clearly you could fail for other reasons but if that is taped off, it will not be the cause.

Do you think they would fail it just on a visual inspection or because they see the tape? I would replace it altogether but there isn’t any replacement part, they don’t make it anymore that’s why I’m trying to fix it. Do you know of any replacement parts? I’ve looked everywhere and was told by Toyota that part is obsolete. A junkyard maybe?

No, a smog check is a check of what is coming out of the tailpipe and if there are codes. I don't think they even pop the hood.

Also, I see that there are not any other there in the common parts sources, so a salvage yard is going to be the best bet. Also, it appears this tube is on any 4.7L so you don't need to stick to a Tundra. However, you will want to stick from 2001-2004 as it appears they are different on different model years.
