I own a 98 3.2 TL with 118614 miles on it. On a recent trip, the speedometer started to jump, die, then work again. It shut off the cruise control every time it moved. Since I got home the speedometer hasn't worked at all. Also, since I got home the D4 indicator light now flashes after the car goes for 30 seconds, no matter what gear I have it in. The flashing is a regular pace on, off, on, off, not like a short. Could the speed sensor cause the speedometer to go out like this? If not, then I guess I'll replace the cluster. And what does it mean when the D4 light flashes? Thanks for any help you might give.

Hi jeffsoderberg,

The speed ensor is the most likely cause of the problem.

If the speed sensor is malfunctioning, it would cause the D4 light to blink, the check engine light would probably show too.

Gear shifting would be sluggish at times as the ECM/PCM needs signals from the VSS to provide gear shifting timing.

A scan would reveal what is causing the D4 light to flash.

I would suggest checking the VSS first, the meter cluster seldom gives problem.
