My manual recommends 91 octane gasoline for my 94 Acura Legend. It is the Type II engine. Can I use the 87 octane or 89 octane and use a gas additive every 4 months? I have been switching from 93 to 89 and noticed no difference. What harm can I do to the engine not using the recommended 91 octane if any? (With these gas prices we all will soon be walking!)

Nothing will happen to the engine just use chevron 87. You're car will be okay.

The engine in the 91-95 Legend states to use premium fuel only. The reason for this is to prevent knocking.

The Legend has Dual Knock sensors and the computer/ECU will detect lesser octane being used- to compensate and prevent knocking it will retard the timing slightly- leading to a loss of power but no damage should occur.

In my personal opinion; stick to 91+ octane so your vehicle performs as intended- the price between regular and premium is not that great.
