My check engine light has been coming on and if I leave it for a few days it will usually turn off. However I notice when it is really cold are the times when my check engine light turns back on. I took it to an auto store and had my codes checked and it read having multiple cylinder misfires. My car has been running fine and I have replaced all the spark plugs within the past year. No weird noises or loss of power have been noticed coming from the engine. Could this problem be as simple as replacing some wires or the ignition coil, or may it be a sign of needing a new distributor? Is there any way to find out without spending a fortune taking it to a repair shop?

Engine running rough or misfiring can be cause by the following-inspect and test all the following below:
1. Defective spark plug.
2. Inadequate spark/coil, defective spark plug wire.
3. Lack of compression
4. False air leakage.
5. Faulty fuel injectors.
6. Insufficient fuel pressure.
7. Contaminated fuel.
8. EGR valve that is leaking.
9. Oxygen sensors.
10. Idle air control valve.
11. Throttle position sensor.
