2001 Acura CL 6 cyl Automatic 148000 miles

Good Morning. I have a rather complex situation. I had to have my transmission replaced 11/2009. About a month later, the engine light came on. I took it back to the same shop to be checked. Initially they told me it was a transmission code that hadn't seen before. But later, they said I needed a tune up. So, I paid close to $300 for a "complete tune up" 01/2010. Then, about a month ago my car started acting really strange. I'd be driving at anytime, fast or slow and the radio would go off, the maint req light would flash, the dials on the dash will go down, the lights will dim and the engine will idle down. All of this happens for about a split second, then goes back to normal. The first few times it did it, I just ignored it. But then it started happening more frequent. Like, maybe 4 or 5 times every 30mins. Then this past Sunday it actually cut off while my 17 year-old son was driving and the engine light stayed on. I took it back to the same shop on Monday. They had my car for 3 days, just to tell me they couldn't find anything wrong and the engine light was a problem in the shifter that the dealer would have to check. Sent my son there to drive it to make sure it was ok. He said it was driving fine. He drove it home. When he checked under the hood, he noticed that they hadn't replaced my engine cover (they forgot it before that's why he checked). I told him to go back and I'd meet him there. They told him to pull it into the garage area. He did and turned it off. They asked him to pull it up some more. So he started it, then before he could put in to drive, it cut off! By this time, it was about 5:30. They asked me to leave it so they could keep looking.

I do know that I my gas sensor is going bad. I don't know the correct name of it. It's the sensor that knows how much gas you have. If I let my tank get too low, like maybe 1/4, it will act funny as if the tank is empty. I bought my car used 3 years ago and it was already like that. I took 2 1/2 years for someone to diagnose that problem.

I said that to say this, could that be causing the other problems? Or, could they have crossed or burned the wires or something when they did the tune up?

I know this is long, but I tried to give as much info to better help you help me :) Thanks!

Hi Leesa870,

Thank you for the donation.

It is good to provide as much information as possible so that we can understand the problems and work on it.

From the symptom description, I believe the ignition switch is bad and has to be replaced.

A safety recall TSB was issued on the ignition switch for some model from 1999 through 2002 but I could not find it for your model so you can check with your dealer if the recall includes your vehicle.

As you transmission has some troble codes present, there was another safety recall TSB on the transmission so you can check if for your vehicle as well. Get the VIN ready to inform the dealer.
