I've had the car for about a month, but it had been sitting for over a year beforehand. Replaced the battery, and everything is good. Drove for an extended period with the AC on high, and the service engine light starts flashing, and the car is struggling. I turn off the AC and the light goes off and car returns to normal. I thought it might be the oil, so I got it changed.
Everything is good for a week, and then the same scenario. Used a code reader, but nothing comes up. I plugged a reader in the car and drove around to try and catch the code while it was happening. It came up with $7E8: Engine (cylinder 2 misfire) and $7E9 (no codes stored). Driving home with the AC off, it starts doing it repeatedly, and the service engine light comes on flashing, then stays on, the car struggles. I pulled over and waited, and everything is fine. This happened several times before I got home. I'm planning on taking it to a mechanic. However, there is a recall for the car that is being fixed on Wednesday. It is recall 22V563000. "A software error in the transmission control unit (CVT-ECU) may incorrectly reduce the transmission gear ratio at high speeds, which can result in an engine stall." Researching the codes makes me think the $7E9 code may be related to the recall, but I'm not sure. Should I wait to take it to the mechanic until after the recall is fixed? I can't afford to have any work done at the dealership, so I don't know who I should take it to first.

I would take it to a mechanic first to have a tune up done. What it sounds like it will fix the problem, either a bad spark plug or ignition coil are very common. The dealer may not do the recall repair until the engine is running correctly. You may want to change the spark plugs and the ignition coils yourself if you have the tools. Then clear the codes. Please check out the diagrams below to see what I am talking about.

NGK Iridium Spark Plug: ILKAR7L11 (pre-gapped from factory, do not adjust iridium tips)

Ignition coil : OEM Part Number:1832A040

You need 4 of each :) Once this repair is done take it in for the recall. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

Hi Ken! Thank you so much for responding. That makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, I am not able to do it myself. I will call a mechanic first thing in the morning to get a tune-up and look at what's going on. I will let you know how everything goes. Thanks again!

So I took it to the mechanic. They replaced the spark plugs and cleaned the fuel system. There was some kind of buildup that could have contributed to the problem. I took it to the dealership and had the recall fixed (updated the software). So far, this seems to have fixed the problem! I'll let you know if anything changes. Thanks again for your help!
