2011 Audi Q5 air conditioning works intermittently

The air conditioning goes off and on. Seems when it's particularly hot, it doesn't work, but this is not consistent. I've had it in for a check up 3 times. They are now considering the compressor.

Does it have to be blowing warm air (not working) in order for the problem to be discovered?

A good A/C tech can diagnose a problem with a 2 gauge charging station, pressure readings on the high and low side of the compressor will tell us a lot about what is going on, get this checked out first.
