Why do my RPMs shoot up when I try to accelerate my car?

Basically, if I try to give my can hardly any gas at all, the RPMs fly up, and the car does not respond accordingly. The car will still drive, but the acceleration is horrible. Eventually, the RPMs will level out if I maintain a certain speed, but as soon as I try to go faster, the Rpms fly up again, until I maintain a certain speed.

I drive a standard, and I have taken good care of it (fluid changes, do not race the car, ect). No waning lights are on, and there is only about 75,000 miles on the car. The problem started recently, and all of the sudden, and it tends to be worse in higher gears, but still effects the lower gears.

It sounds like a bad clutch. It will be more noticeable in higher gears.

Even though the car is still sort of new? Any idea on what it would cost me to fix my clutch?

I say clutch because if the engine is reving but not speeding the car up, it sounds like it is slipping. Keep in mind, there are other parts there that could cause this too such as a bad pressure plate or if the slave cylinder isn't fully releasing the clutch for you.

If it is the clutch, the following items need replaced. Clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and all hydraulics need inspected as well as the flywheel. I would estimate 700.00. However, based on where you live, that can be different.

Thanks for everyone's help. Would it be better to buy the parts my self, then take it to a repair shop?

It is a big job, but you can save some money. If you check our homepage under the DIY section, there is a how to for replacing a clutch. It is written in general, but is helpful.
