I have a rattling noise coming from the right side if the engine. It does it at idle and when driving. I was told that it could be the pulley for the alternator and was also told it was the AC compressor going out. It's annoying and sometime loud like coins being shaken in a can. What can it be? And what should I ask a mechanic to check?

A mechanic should know how to find the noise. You can use a long screwdriver and touch different parts to listen for the noise. Also you can look for loose pulleys etc. Sounds like the noise should be easy to find.

Yes, I did see him use a long screw driver also with another tool like a doctors stethoscope. He said that the pulley was very loud. I guess he made a good diagnosis, but a lady always want to get a second opinion. Thanks

Another way to help check is remove the belt and spinthe pulleys by hand and listen to the way they sound.

Mine is also making that same noise. I have a 2008 Chrysler Sebring. Please let me know when your mechanic fixes your problem. I'm taking my car to the dealer the end of the month, and I will let you know when they diagnose my problem as well.
