I have a 2008 Chevy Malibu LTZ. My wife was driving and the car just stopped. We have a new battery. What would cause the car to shut down while driving. I took the battery cover off and the battery wires were so hot it molded into the battery cover. Now the engine light is on. We bought the car brand new and is now out of warranty. Is this the alternator?

Have the alternator checked could be overcharging the battery and caused that problem-battery could also explode

There is a fusible link that runs form teh alternator to the battery. Check to see if that is burnt up that would take out your power. But check to see if somehitng has shorted out and check yoru mega fuses under the electrical box underhood. Also read this warning.
ONCERNSÂ WITHÂ HARBORÂ FREIGHTÂ TOOLSÂ "STOREHOUSE"Â BRANDEDÂ BLADEÂ TYPEÂ FUSES

eneral Motors has become aware of a fuse recall by Harbor Freight Tools/Storehouse for a variety of aftermarket fuses. In two cases,  these fuses have not provided protection for the wiring system of the vehicles they were
stomer installed in. Upon testing the 15 amp version,  it was found that the fuse still would not "open" when shorted directly across the battery terminals.
