I have a 2007 Pontiac G6 GT. Last week the transmission blew with 4 days left on the warranty. The dealership replaced the transmission and then told us we had loose ball joints in the front of the car and they all needed to be replaced at a cost of $1100. We're getting a second opinion today. I understand how serious this is, but I've been told that we would hear noises in the front of the car -- which we haven't. Yesterday while driving, I really "looked" for a noise. And with the radio and air conditioner off I can hear a faint "click" noise from the steering wheel while driving, but nothing when turning. Is this the noise people are talking about? I keep thinking a noise that indicates a problem would be more apparent. And finally, if we take the car to a service garage, would these replacements cost less than $1100? The car has 64.9K miles on it and I live in NJ.

Prices vary allover u.S. Normally service garages are cheaper than dealers. However you need to getan estimate and have it checked out. When ball joints are bad normally after h itting a bump the car will go one way or another or you'll feel shaking in steering wheel. The Click could be anything. Most places will want to do a front end alignment along with replacement, which should be done. You could call GM and explain to them and they may make a deal with you on half cost, maybe not. But you would know at end of call as it was so close to end of warranty period.
