After driving for 40 minutes home from work, lost power in gears 4&5 and when arrived home white smoke came from under motor and had a strong clutch burning smell. How do I check manual transmission fluid?

there is a plug on side of trans that you stick finger in. but if ther eis no fluid your trans is toast.also if you are smelling aclutch smell check for adjustment. make sure to scan for codes for trans as well.
