I replaced my tires now the traction light comes on. The cars performance has been affected a bit too. Is it safe to travel on the highway under these circumstances?

You probably installed just two new tires and they have a different circumference than the two old ones. The traction control system sees them turning at different speeds and interprets that as spinning. It's applying the brakes to those wheels to try to get them to stop spinning. Turn the system off if you plan on driving the car like that but the anti-lock brakes will be affected yet. You may get a false activation when you stop.
