So I lately had my power steering pump replaced due to a loud rattling in the engine when I accelerate. I had it replaced but the noise has not disappeared. It only makes the noise when I am trying to make it up a hill or taking off from a complete stop with excessive acceleration. The noise is a loud rattling like something is loose and I have had the Serpentine belt tightened so i'm thinking it may be the fan belt. Thoughts please?

It can be a lot of things. Can you tell me roughly where the sound is coming from?

One more thought. Is this a Jeep Liberty or a Subaru Legacy?

It is a 2006 Subaru Liberty. The noise sounds like it is coming from the drivers side of the engine. It only does it with excessive acceleration but when im cruising there is no rattling.

Hi:
Do me a favor. Take a rubber mallet and tap on the exhaust system to see if you can reproduce the sound. And honestly, I never heard of a Subaru Liberty. There aren't even pics of it on google. Is it a sedan or an SUV?

Liberty is the Australian term for Legacy, So they are the same car. It is a Sedan. I will try this ASAP.

That makes sense. Lol Let me know what you find. I think it has to do with either a loose heat shield or it could be the catalytic converter itself. I have seen them come loose internally and the guts of it rattle.

If you don't hear the noise when checking, have a helper basically load the engine in gear with his foot on the brake so it can't move to see if you can tell better where the sound comes from. Just don't stand in front of the car. Lol

Let me know what you find.

I have noticed that when I accelerate hard I hear what sounds like a air leak coming from the back of the car, could the noise and the gear jolting be related to the same problem?
