When I have to apply the brakes quickly or suddenly, my car lurches or lunges forward, even though I have a foot on the brake pedal.

Is this an ABS equipped vehicle? Are there any codes stored in the computer? When was the last time you had a brake job or had them checked? How does the brake pedal feel when you jump down on it? When you apply light pressure? Press the pedal down lightly and hold it. Does it stay up or does the pedal sink to the floor slowly?

Yes my vehicle has ABS and I had my brakes and struts changed in October 2013. Not too sure on codes. When I do come to a complete stop, the brake pedal doesn't sink to the floor but the brakes feel "jerky". Part of me thinks its the transmission as well because when I turn a corner after applying the brakes quickly, whether its left or right, the car lurches forward like its stuck in a gear and then smooths out when I press the gas pedal.

Ok. Getting those codes will help us decide which way to go on figuring this out. Find a shop or store that will do it for free and tell them you need ABS and transmission codes.
