My car has manual tappets.I want them to be adjusted by mechanic. Workshop is about 1.5 km away from my house. Someone has told me that engine should be cold when tappets are adjusted. How much time I should wait at his shop to allow the engine to cool down.

Nice site :-)

Cold engine means it should be below 30 degrees Celcius, that is when you are able to hold engine components and able to with stand the heat. Usually it takes an hour or so for cooling, depending on weather.

Another online mechanic told me that we allow the engine to cool down for 5 hours and then adjust the tappets. Do you think it is advisable?

It is not necessary to wait that long. As long as the engine heat is bearable when you put your hand to it, it is sufficiently cooled.

There are two values of valve cleatrence. One for warm engine and other for cold. After waiting for 1 hour as you advised, I should go for which one?
