Is the shifter lever not going into the reverse position, or is it going in but just not moving? If it is not going into the reverse position from park, then it is probably a small electrical problem. If it is going into the reverse position, but just not moving, then it is more likely that your transmission is bad and needing at least a partial rebuild. If that is the case, you will have to have a transmission shop look at it and give you a quote on the repair (probably over $1,000.00).

My truck won't go into reverse. It is a 2002 Ford Explorer v8 automatic. Do you know what the problem could be and/or about how much it would cost to fix it?

If you have drive I would be thinking that it is a internal problem with the transmission, a scan may shed some light on the cause, but this will have to be check first hand by a trans tech as there will be special test equipment used to help with a full diagnoses.

Do you think it is possibly a linkage problem or maybe a clogged trans filter?

Hard to say with out being able to inspect it first hand. It will not be a filter as you have forward with no reported problems, if it was a shifter problem you would have other shift related issues as well.
