I drive nationwide. For two years, my 2006 Ford E350 (5.4v8?)A/c has blown very cold while driving, but way above 70 when at idle. A couple of weeks ago the dealer diagnosed bad valves in the compressor and replaced it (big$$$). Problem was solved, but only temporarily.

Could be a cooling fan or condensor problem sounds like not enough air cooling the engine at idle. Does the van run slightly hotter at idle than on the highway? Might check there first.

Temp at idle is just fine, winter and summer. Why would new a compressor temporarily fix a condensor problem?

If you had bad valves in the compressor, there is a good chance that there is crap in thw system and it's plugged or partially plugged the filter/orfice. That could do it as well. You'll have to hook up a set of gauges to really get a good idea as towhat is wrong though.
