THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS A-HOLLERIN' THAT THE COMPUTER AS HAS BEEN INFORMED OF A PROBLEM

THE 1st STEP IS TO LISTEN TO IT, AS NORMALLY THE COMPUTER IS THE 1st ONE TO KNOW, GUESSING AND THROWING POSSIBLE EXPENSIVE PARTS AT IT MAY NOT EVEN GET CLOSE TO FIXIN' THE ISSUE

SO

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

IS

GO TO A POPULAR AUTO PARTS STORE, SOMETHING LIKE ADVANCE AUTO PARTS OR AUTOZONE. THEY WILL SCAN FOR CODES WITH THEIR PORTABLE SCANNER. THIS WILL "READ" THE CODE NUMBERS.

HERE'S THE MOST-US, IMPORTAMUS PART!

THE CODE(S) DON'T TELL YOU WHAT IS WRONG OR WHAT PART TO CHANGE, THEY ONLY TELL THE COMPUTER WHAT SYSTEM IS HAVING A PROBLEM AND MAYBE IF IT'S OPERATION IS NO WITHIN THE SPECS IT SHOULD BE IN. SOMETIMES ANOTHER PART OR SYSTEM WILL AFFECT ANOTHER ('NUTHER WORDS, THE AFFECTED SYSTEM IF FINE, WHATEVER AFFECTED IT NEEDS FIXIN'

HAVE PAPER AND PEN WITH YOU

WRITE DOWN THE CODE NUMBERS, AN EXAMPLE OF A CODE MIGHT BE, "P0123"

THERE MAY BE SEVERAL/ GET 'EM ALL!

USUALLY WHEN THIS IS GOING ON, THE STORE EMPLOYEE MAY OFFER A REASON OR SOLUTION FOR THE CODE(S).

HE MAY BE DEAD ON WITH THE INFO, BUT HE COULD BE WRONG TOO! CODES MIGHT BE INTERPRETED IN DIFFERENT WAYS, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE CODES MIGHT POINT TOWARDS A DIFFERENT FIX.

COMING BACK HERE SAYING "THE MAN SAID IT WAS THE EGR" (OR OTHER) KINDA MIGHT NOT TELL US ANYTHING USEFUL. THE ACTUAL CODES ARE THE MOST USEFUL HERE.

THE AUTO PARTS STORE WILL USUALLY DO THE SCAN FOR FREE. LIKE I SAID, THEIR SUGGESTED "FIX" MAY BE 100% ON THE MONEY. THEN AGAIN, MAY NOT BE
