What could make a clicking noise.

My wifes Accord sometimes makes a clicking sound upon startup. Clicking sound seems to be coming from around the power steering pump area or the firewall on the passenger side. Sounds kind of like a selenoid clicking but doesn't appear to be coming from the engine like a valve or lifter issue. She says its getting louder and it usually clicks for about 5-10 seconds but she said today it clicked for about 30 or 40 seconds. It only happens once or twice a week either in the morning or when she starts up to come home from work in the afternoon.

Thanks

Does the frequency of the clicking relate to engine speed? Or outside temperature?

Well, it is cold here at night (about 25F) but the car is keep at night in the garage (outside at work) and this just started about 3 weeks ago. It didn't do it earlier in the winter when it was a lot colder. The click doesn't accelerate with the engine at all, it stays pretty constant, about 1 or 2 clicks per second and after 10-20 seconds, it stops. I've only heard it twice and the wife has heard it twice, she says today it was louder and lasted longer. The last time I heard it, I opened the hood and tried to pinpoint it, seemed to be somewhere around the power steering pump. Fluid was full.

If the noise becomes more predictable, ie. It happens every time you start the car. You could try removing the fan belt, start the engine briefly and see if the noise is still there or not.
