Engine has a misfire and I smell gas

Why is my 2005 ford escape is mising out so bade that you can smell gas and when you take your foot off the gas it will not stay runing so what do I need try to do?

Check for vacuum leaks. Check compression. Check the plugs for fouling and proper gap. Make sure the plug wires are properly and fully seated on the plugs. Make sure the timing is set properly.
