what could cause this ?

I was driving down the road when suddenly my odometer drops to zero and my check engine light pops on I was told to cut the car off immediately so I wouldn't mess anything up. I tried to re start the car and would not crank I have put new battery in car checked oil and made sure water was in radiator, the engine turns over but won't crank . What could this be from
