What could cause this?

I was driving down the road when suddenly my odometer drops to zero and my check engine light pops on I was told to cut the car off immediately so I wouldn't mess anything up. I tried to re start the car and would not crank I have put new battery in car checked oil and made sure water was in radiator, the engine turns over but won't crank. What could this be from

You need to find out what is missing causing the problem. The above link explains how but I would suggest getting a scan done first as the MIL shoed prior to the problem.
