My temp gauge shot up

While driving in town my temp gauge shot up almost in the red. Turning on the a/c cooled it to mid range until I could get home. Also my heater has not been working lately. I have already checked the water level

Check if the electric radiator fan is turning on. It will also turn on when the air conditioning is turned on. If it is indeed a fan problem, the overheating won't occur at highway speeds when natural air flow takes over.
