2005 Chevrolet Express temperature gauge

temperature gauge works fine until it reaches 180+ degrees and then quits completely. after shutting vehicle off for several hours, it works again, but only until it reaches the 180+ temp again. The vehicle was not used for several months and had to be jumped to start. everything was fine when we parked it last june.

Start with check for trouble codes. Have the Engine Coolant temperature checked.

trouble codes are clear, coolant temp at 190 degrees

A faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause non starting.
Was the coolant level checked ?

coolant level is good. van starts and runs ok. its just the temperature gauge quitting that's the concern.

Either the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor or meter is faulty.
