What could be the cause of 3rd gear that wont shift up to 4th

I have a 2005 745li (v8, 4.4liter, current km: 156,450) and I have a problem with my transmission, in which the 3rd gear wont shift up to 4th. And neither sport mode or manual mode are working

What could be the cause(s) of the problem?

It culd be mechanical, electrical or hydraulic but the sports mode not working points to electrical or control faults.

Get a scan to check for trouble codes which would help to zero in on thge possible causes.
