How do I tell if clutch is bad or just throw-out bearing?

I recently had a local shop install front axle/hub/bearing in my 2004 Volvo V70R 6 speed manual. Car has 113000 miles, still original clutch. Took technician on test drive with me, pulled out in 1st gear but lots of chatter, slipping and elevated rpm's. 2nd and 3rd showed the same. Let tech drive and the clutch finally gave completly up. Pedal feel still good, could still change gears as before just would not engage clutch, could not move an inch. Sound like a stuck throw-out bearing? Possible to change without too much drama? If whole tranny has to come down, time for clutch/pressure plate, huh. Ugh! Ideas on how many hours for job
