2004 Pontiac Bonneville tachometer

My tachometer is not reading correctly. Even when the car is off, it shows 2,000 RPM. When driving, it seems to register between 5,000 and 7,000 and this is not going over 55 mph. It doesn't sound like it is idling high. When it manages to come down some it's like a "ticking" motion. I have only had this car 2 weeks and nothing has ever happened to any vehicle that I have ever owned. It really bothers me and would like to get the problem taken care of but am very limited on income. Please someone help me to decide what needs to be done.

Could be an issue with instrument cluster? Does the speedometer work ok? I haven't looked at our database yet for your vehicle. If the computer sends data message to instrument cluster for gages, then I suspect the instrument cluster. I'll take a look.

I did look at info for vehicle. Right now, I think the problem is your instrument cluster. If you want to dig deeper, you can check wiring circuits. Also, Check to see if there are any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free.

Just to add, I'm not sure of your engine liter size? With the 3.8L engine, If the speedometer works and the tach doesn't, Again, I suspect the instrument cluster.

It is a 3.8L V6 3800 engine. We have an O'Reily's, AutoZone, and Advance Auto in this city that I live in. Do you know which one would be able to help the most with a diagnostic?

For reading trouble codes, I guess any of them are ok. You can call and make sure they will check codes? Other than the codes, I don't believe they will do any diagnostics.
