Engine temp gauge reads max hot when the ECU tells me that the temp is normal. It happens intermittently. Why?

engine temp reads only coolant temperature, there are many other temperatures that the ecu monitors.

It could be a faulty sending unit, poor ground circuit connections or an inaccurate gauge if the coolant are not overheating.
