truck wont stay running

ford f-150 2004 the battery light came on, when I stop the truck would not start,I charged the battery and it started while it was running i took the cables off the battery and it died,what is the problem ? new battery or something else.thanks

First thing is NEVER remove the battery cable with the engine running. That's the fastest way to fry most every electronic component in the truck that i know. Take a voltage reading with the engine idling and no accessories on and see if the charging system is working properly.
