I smell fuel but not when I open the hood

Hi I have 2004 ford explorer 57000 miles now some times when the heater is on, mostly long time then sometime I smell gas mean fuel, not a bad odor but smell gas I open the hood but no smell gas, it happens not always

If you smell gas, there is most likely a leak. Check fuel pump pressure first and then fuel pressure drop off. The system should maintain pressure for some time. If it drops to 0 quickly, there is a leak. There are directions on our homepage under the DIY section and a video to help you with this process.
