Car starts up fine. When stopping at a stop sign or red light, it "coughs", "puts" and when I press on gas to take off, I have to press hard for it to go. When driving it's ok. But when idling is when there is a problem.

Ok, then try taking some choke cleaner and clean the throttle plate and idle air control valve, clean teh plate on both sides, you'll need to disconnect the air duct to do this. Get all thegunkout you can. The car may start hard after doing this. Make sure to hook up air duct before starting.
