2004 Chevrolet Impala Brake Guides Needed On Rear Assembly Did Brakes Replaced

are the brake guides needed on the rear brake assembly? when i did my brakes i replaced my roters and pads and the guides started grinding on the new roters, i have currently left them off, is this a safety issue?
