What does adding a spacer to the intake provide? Better fuel mileage and air?

What part of the manifold?

It is all about the speed of the air in the intake system.

I was told I needed to add an cold air intake and spacer for better fuel mileage. I was also told the perk was increase in power. Would also upgrading plugs and wires help? Performance distributor and igntion box?

Not a believer in the cold air intake. It voids all warranties on the engine form all manufactures. Adding this does very little in increase in power unless you let the motor breathe more in the exhaust as well. There is a lot more to adding power than adding a cold air intake.

I would research this very well before making a decision on any addons.
It will be costly to do it correctly and the gain will be minimal.

If you don't want to be a sucker, keep away from those who tell you this. If it is so easy to improve on mileage, why aren't the manufacturers doing it? They spent billions to try to get a solution for fuel efficiency and are still improving on it.

If anybody can do it, he can possibly match Bill Gates for wealth.
