What is the temp reading? Is it boiling over? How do you know the thermostat is opening and closing for a couple of seconds? Maybe the fan is turning on and off?

First off I would make sure the thermostat is good. Pull it out and put it in a pot of water and heat it till it opens, use a thermometer to check when this happens. It should be 190 -195 degrees. If the thermostat checks out I would next check your water pump for circulation and makes sure the rotation is correct. While checking your water pump also check the belt for tension.
