2003 Hyundai Elantra help

I have a 2003 elantra. I was driving and the check engine light came on 10 mins later I noticed the temp gauge go past 'H' then smoke coming from the hood and exhaust. When I lifted the hood I noticed a goo substance near the coolant cap. What could be wrong with it?
