just looked at the gauges and noticed the check engine light was on. It's ready for an oil change. I reset the % until I can change the oil. Would that be the problem?

That won't be a problem. However, make sure you don't forget. Also, when you do change it, reset the computer again.

MAKE SURE THE OIL LEVEL IS FULL.

To address the check engine light, you need to have a diagnostic system check of the powertrain. This can be done at most auto part chains. Regular occurrences involve a faulty catalyst(P0420/430), vent system performance(P0446), or oxygen sensor heater circuit faults. As a primary visual you can do yourself, check that the fuel cap is fully installed.
