Engine is running really rough when it first starts

My car shakes right after I start it and it continues for a couple mins after then evens out do you know what could be causing this? The check engine lights are not on so I assume hooking it to a comp for reading wouldnt work today it did it longer though about four or five mins what should I check?I usually work on my own cars but this one is new to me so im still learning about it. Thank you for your time

Scanning for codes will show and 'soft' codes that have been set but won't cause the CEL to flash or illuminate. It will also show any 'hard' codes, that will give a visual indication on the CEL.

The guys at auto zone would not run it for me without the check engine light on could you suggest somewhere that might?

O' Reilly's might. Pep Boys. Napa. CarQuest. Look in the phone book for repair facilities that advertise free diagnostic scanning.
