WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER "COMMON" TUNE UP PARTS?

....LIKE DISTRIBUTOR CAP......ROTOR BUTTON.....PLUG WIRES......FUEL FILTER.......PCV......COMPLETE FLUID CHANGES.......ETC?

ANY MORE---MOST PEOPLE DO NOT PERFORM PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE ON THEIR RIG..........MAYBE THEY THINK IT'S TOO COMPLICATED???

........THE ONE I LIKE HEARING IS......"I TOLD THE MECHANIC TO CHECK IT ALL OUT".......LIKE HE'S GONNA MOST LIKELY DO THE REPAIR AT HAND, NOT YOUR PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, UNLESS YOU SPECIFY IT.............THERE AGAIN.....IT DOES COST

I LIKE DIY........I CAN SUGGEST WAYS TO SAVE $$$ TOO

THEY WAIT TILL SOMETHING BREAKS, THEN ATTEMPT TO "CATCH UP"----BUT USUALLY STOP, WHEN THEY ACCIDENTALLY "PICK THE RIGHT DOOR"!!!

I'M NOT TRYING TO BE A PAIN----MUCH OF THIS STUFF IS OUTLINED IN AN OWNER'S MANUAL

......................BUT EVEN BETTER!!!!!!............SEE MY LINK!!!!!.......YOU NEED TO "CATCH UP"....COMPLETLY, THEN SEE IF THE PROBLEMS PERSIST

A lot of us are older and always think about basics. Some new cars dont have distributors and wires but the basic principles about spark are the same.

Degrading people who try to help you is not going to get you any answers from the rest of us who want to help. We all are very smart when it comes to cars but is difficult to daig something we cannot see or touch. We work off information you provide.

Insults dont help. Maybe we can start again here to help you without the attitude

Have you checked the fuel pump pressure? Is it within spec? Also, have you checked for vacuum leaks? The lean code may be the result of a leak.

Ok, first I would say to check fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure will make it run lean. It would explain the miss and backfire cold.

I am assuming it was a 171 or 174 code. Forget which is which bank.

Check for vacuum leaks around the intake. The pcv is always suspect but will throw lean code for both banks.

Monitor the o2 sensor long term trim to see where it goes at idle and at 2500 rpm.

Lastly, this should have a mass air flow sensor. Make sure the hoses are tight and if you can get the voltage readings at idle and 2500 rpm.

Did you verify compression when you did the plugs?

Not a problem. We understand. I just hope we can help. I have worked on chrysler products for about 30 years. Everything you described sounds like a vacuum issue. Have you checked vacuum with a gauge? Also, ASEmaster6371 is an outstanding tech. Have you done the things he recommended?

If Roy and I can't get this figured out, there are many other techs we can refer you to.

COULD YOU GO TO WHERE THE HVAC SYSTEM TIES INTO THE MANIFOLD VACUUM AND TEMPORARILY SNATCH IT LOOSE AND CAP IT?

THIS MIGHT ELIMINATE THE HVAC SYSTEM VACUUM OUT OF THE EQUATION TOATALLY.

OTHER THAN SQUIRTING CARB CLEANER INTO THE CRAMMED SPACES OF YOUR ENGINE COMPARTMENT LOOKING FOR A LEAK

I WATCHED MY DAD'S MECHANIC DURING THE EARLY '70s DEMONSTRATE THIS METHOD TO HIM, I WAS ABOUT 10, ONE OF THEM THINGS YOU DON'T FORGET

I'VE USED IT MYSELF, IT DOES WORK, I'VE FOUND IT EZer TO HAVE A HELPER TO KEEP WATCH, AND USE A LONGER HOSE FURTHER BACK, DO IT IN A "STILL AIR ENVIRONMENT", IF POSSIBLE

Use the brake booster for the vacuum check. It should be a steady vacuum of about 20-22 inches. If it jumps or varies around, it could be vavle issues. Exhaust valves burning on this motor is common but before jumping into a repair, we need to be sure. The vacuum gaue will assist in this as well as a compression test.

Fuel pressure around 55 but if it was the issue, both banks would be running lean, not 1 side.

Injectors may be the problem but make sure you remove the rail, clean it of all debris and change fuel filter again.

Sounds like you are off to a good start

Well saw a lil more steam then usual yesterday mourning so I got a block checker with the blue fluid and it turnd yellow in about a min ive been reading up and apparently this motor has a terrible head gasket problem will a head gasket prob make one run lean I figured it would be more rich cause im sure all the fuel isnt getting burnt but I also know steam has a lot of oxygen in it which maybe making the o2 read lean would explain prior misfire code apparently dodge throws missfire codes during a blown head gasket im going to pull the plugs and look at the top of the pistons all the picks on the internet shows where the piston and valves are very clean no carbon due to steam ive also been reading on these motors compression checks sometimes dont work from what I read they will still show good compression Roy could you explain how the o2 sensor knows which bank it is when both banks dump in to one pipe before going by the o2 sensor. Thanks I understand on a cali emession dodge because it has 4 sensors 2 on each pipe mine has 2 one before cat one after thanks again

I WORK PART TIME IN AN AUTO PARTS STORE----I DELIVER PARTS TO MANY REPUTABLE SHOPS

MY JEEPS HAVE NOT BEEN TO A "MECHANIC" SINCE 1987 (WHEN PREVIOUS EVIL WIFE TOOK ONE OF 'EM. WHILE I WAS DEPLOYED)

I ALSO HAVE OVER A YEAR'S EXPERIENCE IN A ENGINE BALANCING MACHINE SHOP, PRIOR TO THAT, 2 YEARS DURING HIGH SCHOOL, AND LOTS OF WORKIN' ON THEM PRECIOUS OLDER CARBURETED VEHICLES................AND NOW, NOWADAYS, JUST FROM WORD OF MOUTH, JEEP CJs SEEM TO FIND THEIR WAY TO MY TWO CAR GARAGE DOOR .........AND MY 2CARPROS GARAGE DOOR........FROM TIME TO TIME

IN BOTH CASES, I MAKE THEM DO THE WORK, I EXPLAIN THE "HOWS AND WHYS" AS WELL AS DEMONSTRATIONS........THE USE OF MY TOOLS.......MANY TIMES GIVE 'EM NUTS, BOLTS, AND SOMETIMES JEEP STUFF I HAVE ON HAND......DRIVE 'EM TO THE PARTS STORE FOR THE STUFF THEY NEEDED.................THEY BUY THEIR OWN PARTS

NORMALLY, WHEN THEY GET READY TO LEAVE WITH A BIG OLE GRIN ON THEIR FACE.......THEIR JEEP RUNNING BETTER THAN EVER.........AND NOW UNDERSTANDING A LOT MORE ABOUT DOING THEIR OWN REPAIRS, WHAT "PROPER TOOLING" MEANS......AND THE IMPORTANCE OF A REPAIR MANUAL.............................THEY'LL ASK ME, "WHAT DO I OWE YOU?".................MY WIFE DOES NOT LIKE MY ANSWER........."WHATEVER YOU THINK IT WAS WORTH TO YOU"

I USUALLY COME OUT OK, AS MOST SEE THEY WOULD NOT "LEARN" AND HAVE THE "HANDS ON", ALONG WITH "TROUBLESHOOTING" THEIR OWN PROBLEM

MOST OF MY SO CALLED "CLIENTS" ARE JUST IN NEED OF A GOOD TUNE UP........20+ YEARS OVERDUE!

YOU WERE CORRECT IN THE BEGINNING!!!........................I AM NOT A MECHANIC

............................I AM A PLUMBER!

NOW THEN----THE BESTUS STUFF FOR A HEAD GASKET ISSUE???

NEVER HAD A BAD GASKET ON A CJ OF MINE

EVERYBODY 'ROUND HERE, SWEARS BY THIS PRODUCT.....EVEN THE BIG SHOPS!!!

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_head-gasket-sealant-blue-devil_7120032-p?searchTerm=head+gasket+sealer

THE REPUTABLE GUYS SAY IT WORKS WELL---IF THE DIRECTIONS ARE FOLLOWED TO A "TEE"

WANNA SAVE SOME $$$???TRY THIS---OR DO SIMILAR WITH YOUR OWN LOCAL PARTS STORES.................WITH ADVANCE AUTO PARTS, "PROMO CODE"---"A124" WAS STILL A-WORKING!----SEE MY LINK

THE MEDIC

JUST LAST NIGHT HELPED A 1980 CJ 5 INSTALL ANOTHER INTAKE ON HIS.....THEN A QUICK TUNE-UP

HE LEARNED THE VALUABLE LESSON THE HARD WAY......"TIGHTENING SEQUENCE AND TORQUE" IS VERY IMPORTANTA WEEK AGO, HE JUST SORTA STARTED TIGHTENING FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER AND BROKE THE PREVIOUS INTAKE MANIFOLD WITH ONLY A RATCHET

I PRINTED OFF A DIAGRAM FOR HIM TO USE WHILE MY OTHER PAL AND I SCHOOLED HIM ON HOW THE TORQUE WRENCH WORKED
