Changing my transmission fluid in my truck listed above 1500. It’s the 4l60e automatic transmission.

My question is, what is the best transmission fluid to use? I know some transmission rebuilders don’t like synthetic fluid. It’s too slippery for clutch packs. Then there’s Dextron 111, Dexron vi, and dec/mec. It’s all very confusing.

What is the best and what brand should I use in the 4l60e transmission?
Thanks

Good afternoon, HD2424,

I always go by what the manufacturer wants you to use. For your vehicle GM recommends DEXRON VI. Original you probably had DEXRON-III. My information says you will need 5-6 quarts for a drain and refill, but I would get 7 or 8 and just return what you don't use. Just to be safe.

There was a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) released April of 2007 TSB-04-07-30-037C, then updated in 2011 04-07-30-037E. This TSB basically states 2008 and prior GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks, among others, should be changed from DEXRON-III to DEXRON-VI. (I will attach screenshots of the TSB for you.)

Normally the rule of thumb is to go by what is stamped on the dipstick, but I would follow the TSB in this instance and use the DEXRON-VI that GM recommends.

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban with a 4L60E, and I use DEXRON VI.

According to the TSB, DEXRON-VI is compatible with prior fluids including DEXRON-III meaning you do not need to flush out the DEXRON-III first unless it's a warranty repair.

There are many fluids out there, most are universal such as Amalie. I would stay away from them all and use the manufacturer's fluid.

This fluid is a full-synthetic. In my opinion synthetic is better. It is chemically modified to provide many benefits including working better at higher temperatures or extreme cold as well as better viscosity which helps with horsepower-loss and fuel efficiency, as well as many others.

Thank you,
Brendon
