Engine is surging on its own sometimes

Is there something wrong if my car suddenly began to do quick little "REVS" every few miles without any extra pressure to the gas pedal? The revolutions gauge does a little jump from 2 up to 2.5 and then slowly comes back down, and there is a slight but noticeable jerk, kind of like in an older car when you can feel the transmission as it shifts up or down. I haven't noticed it when driving faster or slower but when I'm between 50 and 60 miles per hour it happens pretty regularly (every couple of miles). This just started a week or so ago (around August 25th) and has happened every time I drive my car. Thanks for your help!

Last tune up was this June, had the oil changed and everything looked over. Also had the battery changed this summer. Since I've had the car, the check engine light has occasionally come on, and then goes off by itself usually after I get gas so I've always assumed that was a loose gas cap. The light is not currently on.

Check engine light on

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
