My 2003 BMW 325i squeals when I start it in cold, humid weather. When the temperature is warm, it does not squeal. The mechanic can't figure out what's wrong. He's replaced the idler and tensioner pulley and the intake manifold actuator and it still squeals. He's now thinking it's the alternator. Help! I can't afford any more repairs!

Noise can be difficult to trace from cyberspace. The repairs to the tensioner and deflection pulleys usually take care of the squealing, so from here I am unsure of what might be next. I would need to hear it for myself to diagnose it. The alternator could be eliminated as the source if the belt were slipped off during a cold start, usually they are not temperature sensitive.
