Won't start. Clicking sound from what appears to be EGR valve

Tapping valve allows engine to start, but I don't understand why. Don't understand why EGR would keep engine from starting

It wont. The noise is most likely something else close to it.

Anyway, you need to check the basics. It needs compression, fuel pressure and spark. One of them is missing and you need to find out which one is failing.

The clicking sound is definitely coming from a solenoid on top of the engine attached to the manifold. I ca n feel it while the car ignition is turned to start. Tapping the solenoid with a hammer allows the car to start. I'll take a picture of the solenoid if it will help.
